{"id":15128,"date":"2026-06-14T20:57:44","date_gmt":"2026-06-14T18:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/?p=15128"},"modified":"2026-07-01T21:28:26","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T19:28:26","slug":"three-blesseds-one-living-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/es\/three-blesseds-one-living-mission\/","title":{"rendered":"Love Made Visible: Three Blesseds, One Living Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Within the space of one week in June, our sisters and partners-in-mission honored three women whose inspirational lives form a single thread running through our history and mission today: the feast days <strong>of Blessed Marie-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se de Soubiran<\/strong> <strong>and Blessed Maria Droste zu Vischering<\/strong> fell on June 7 and 8, respectively, and the birthday of <strong>Beata Mar\u00eda Agustina Rivas L\u00f3pez<\/strong>, known affectionately as Aguchita, was celebrated on June 13.<\/p>\n<p>They lived in different eras and on different shores \u2014 France, Germany, Portugal, and Peru. Each faced her own particular trial. Yet each responded to suffering and uncertainty with an unflinching trust in God. Across the Good Shepherd mission, from the Philippines to Portugal, from Lebanon to Angola, from Peru to Madagascar, their spirit continues to take flesh in the daily work of the mission.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Marie-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se de Soubiran: Hope in the Midst of Injustice<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Born in France in 1834, Marie-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marieauxiliatrice.catholique.fr\/en\/\">Congregation of the Sisters of Marie-Auxiliatrice<\/a>, dedicating herself to education, healthcare, and care for the vulnerable. However, she was falsely accused of financial mismanagement, stripped of her leadership, and forced to leave the congregation she had built. In 1874, she was welcomed by the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity in Paris, where she lived quietly until her death on June 7, 1889.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15131 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/BMTS-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/BMTS-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/BMTS-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/BMTS-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/BMTS-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/BMTS-18x10.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/BMTS.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Her ability to hold hope steady in the face of injustice echoes throughout the world today. In the Philippines, the Provincialate community gathered for prayer on her feast day and found her story uncomfortably resonant with the world around them: <strong>poor governance, economic hardship, natural disasters, and the grief of sudden, senseless loss<\/strong>. &#8220;<em>While we cannot overcome every crisis,<\/em>&#8221; the community reflected, &#8220;<em>we can wait patiently for the light, respond with compassion to the situation before us, nurture life-giving relationships, and choose hope grounded in trust in God<\/em>.&#8221; These are Marie-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se&#8217;s own instincts, discovered anew. The guest floor for visitors to the Good Shepherd Compound in Quezon City has now been named Marie Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Place to honor the spirit of hospitality she embodied.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Maria Droste: Love That Works Itself to Death<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Maria Droste zu Vischering was born into German aristocracy in 1863 and might have lived a life of comfort. Instead, she entered the Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd in 1888 and was soon sent to Porto, Portugal, to revive a struggling house. On her arrival, she placed an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the chapel. From that gesture flowed everything else \u2014 a ministry among the poor and vulnerable, the introduction of the first Fridays of the month as days of prayer and devotion, and an extraordinary mystical life that she kept almost entirely hidden.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-15133 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gudula-Foto-2-002_45-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gudula-Foto-2-002_45-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gudula-Foto-2-002_45-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gudula-Foto-2-002_45-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gudula-Foto-2-002_45-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gudula-Foto-2-002_45-1638x2048.jpg 1638w, https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gudula-Foto-2-002_45-10x12.jpg 10w, https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gudula-Foto-2-002_45.jpg 1887w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>Sr. Gudula Busch (left) from Germany, who passed away in 2023, knew her writings intimately. She credited the perseverance of her <strong>61 years of religious life<\/strong> to Maria Droste zu Vischering, whom she described as &#8220;<em>a fully normal Good Shepherd sister with lots of work, relatively little time for prayer and study of spiritual writings \u2014 she had a striking personality with rough edges. She literally worked herself to death and loved without limit<\/em>&#8220;. Following her death on June 8, 1899, the very feast of the Sacred Heart she had spent her life promoting, Pope Leo XIII consecrated the world to the Sacred Heart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15140 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Bishop_169-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Bishop_169-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Bishop_169-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Bishop_169-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Bishop_169-18x10.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.olcgs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Bishop_169.jpg 1497w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Maria Droste\u2019s legacy reaches far beyond Portugal, where sisters, friends, and neighbors still gather at <em>Casa Irm\u00e3 Maria<\/em> in Porto to pray at her relics. A teacher and pastoral worker, she gave herself especially to rural indigenous communities and poor women in the Peruvian jungle. On September 27, 1990, she was murdered by the Shining Path guerrilla movement while carrying out her mission in La Florida. Maria Droste reminds us that prayer must open the heart to concrete compassion. Marie-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se shows that hidden fidelity can sustain communities through transition and pain. Aguchita teaches that love for those most at risk may demand courage, truth, and even the gift of one&#8217;s own life.
