In this update, Sr. Magdalena Sandae Win, Communications Coordinator for Myanmar, describes destroyed crops and difficulties delivering aid, while the World Food Program estimates that 12.4 million people across the country are experiencing hunger.

Myanmar is experiencing severe flooding in several parts of the country due to heavy monsoon rains. To date, an estimated 600,000 people (UN report) have been affected by ongoing floods, with homes, roads, schools, health facilities and livelihoods seriously disrupted. The situation remains difficult in several areas, and further flooding has continued in some regions throughout September.

The flood situation is particularly serious for rural communities whose main source of income is agriculture. Many farms and plantations have been submerged, resulting in the loss of crops and income. For families who depend entirely on farming, the destruction of their crops means not only an immediate shortage of food but also the loss of their livelihood for the coming months. The impact is therefore expected to continue even after the floodwaters recede. Families and communities are facing growing difficulty meeting their daily food and basic needs.

In response to this urgent situation, Good Shepherd Myanmar has begun an emergency response, in coordination with the local Diocese and with the generous support of local donors and GSIF. The initial response focuses on providing essential food and basic supplies to families most affected by the flooding. Our sisters and local partners are working together to identify the most vulnerable households and to deliver assistance as quickly as possible.

However, humanitarian access still requires close coordination and careful planning. The response team has encountered some challenges at checkpoints while traveling to affected communities, where relief items, including food supplies for affected families, have been subject to checks and verification. Despite these challenges, the team continues to work closely with relevant authorities and stakeholders to facilitate the safe and timely delivery of assistance.

Many families have lost their crops, food stocks, and sources of income. Families of our sisters and partners-in-mission in the country are also affected by the flooding. This makes the situation particularly close to the hearts of our sisters and partners, who are accompanying and supporting the affected communities as much as possible.

GS Myanmar remains committed to standing with the people during this difficult time. Through coordination with the diocese, local communities and generous local donors, the sisters have already taken the first steps in providing emergency assistance. We continue to assess the situation and explore ways to respond to the immediate food needs while also considering the longer-term recovery of families whose livelihoods have been severely damaged.

We are grateful for the solidarity, prayers, and support of the Good Shepherd community around the world. At this difficult time, the presence and accompaniment of the Good Shepherd Sisters offer hope and practical support to families who are struggling to recover from this disaster.

Monsoon flooding in Myanmar has deepened the hardship of communities already facing conflict, displacement, and rising food prices.
