Recently graduated from the University of Notre Dame, Good Shepherd Volunteer Abby Hunt of Indianapolis, Indiana, arrived in Washington Heights, New York City, to begin her 10-month internship as an associate with Good Shepherd International Justice and Peace. Here she shares something of her journey so far.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Before even arriving in New York City, we experienced a refreshing retreat in the middle of New Jersey with the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. I am so grateful for this entire week of getting to know my fellow volunteers and preparing for my site placement. They helped me prepare in ways that I didn\u2019t even realize I needed. We dived into how the four tenets of Good Shepherd Volunteers<\/a> (GSV) \u2013 Simplicity, Spirituality, Social Justice, and Community <\/strong>\u2013 will play a big role this year in our work placements. So many Good Shepherd Volunteers in the program this year are going to great places around the world. I was especially excited to get to know my fellow Washington Heights GSVs at orientation, who I will be sharing accommodation with for the year. I am glad that this program is filled with so many great people and that my placement is even better than I could have imagined.<\/p>\n

\"\"Once in the city, my roommates and I have been slowly settling into our new routine. We went through orientation at our three separate jobs, and through different group activities, I\u2019ve heard how this journey has been from their perspective. I love hearing about my roommates\u2019 different job placements because our jobs help make a positive impact on the world <\/strong>in such unique ways.<\/p>\n

I work at the Good Shepherd International Justice and Peace<\/strong> office in New York, doing advocacy work at the United Nations. At this office, I get to work with Main NGO Representative Kimberly Happich Moloche and Gender Equality and Youth Officer Charlotte Vogel, along with our new intern, Lexi Tasayco. I am beyond grateful for our amazing communication and healthy work environment. This allows us to accomplish our work advocating for those in need while allowing me to get real-world experience in my professional skills. I was really excited to use my studies in digital marketing and film for our organization\u2019s communications.<\/p>\n

My team has been super supportive as I begin this new professional journey. One project I have especially enjoyed is working with the Groupe de travail sur les filles<\/a> on its shadow report. After the group wrote the content, I designed the full report and helped prepare it for publication. I am also helping plan activities for the Journ\u00e9e internationale de la petite fille<\/a>. Both projects have shown me how much work goes into making space for girls\u2019 voices in advocacy at the UN.<\/p>\n

I recently received my UN security badge, which allows me to enter the UN for meetings and events. I have been attending events during Climate Week NYC<\/a> and at the General Assembly of the United Nations<\/a>. I get to learn from the advocates, speakers, and Member State representatives at these events. Each event helps me understand how GSIJP brings the experiences of people supported by Good Shepherd programs into conversations at the UN, and how those conversations relate to the work happening in communities, ministries, and projects around the world.<\/p>\n

I am still learning how much work happens before an event or report reaches the UN, and I am grateful to be part of that process at GSIJP. I look forward to continuing the projects I have started with the Working Group on Girls and supporting the advocacy training for girls in Peru<\/strong>. My hope is that the reports, events, and training I help prepare will bring the experiences of Good Shepherd program participants into UN discussions, while giving girls more opportunities to speak for themselves. Through my placement and the community I have found in Washington Heights, I am living out the four GSV tenets of simplicity, spirituality, social justice, and community. I am excited to see what the rest of this year will teach me.<\/p>\n
