What began as a humble response to the cry of vulnerable children has blossomed into a sanctuary of hope, healing, and transformation. On October 13, 2025, Karunalayam (‘House of Mercy’) in Mangalagiri, India, celebrated a significant milestone—25 years of unwavering service to homeless and at-risk children.

Founded on the east coast of India, Karunalayam stands as a testament to the power of compassion in action. This remarkable center has become a true home for girls and some boys who have been abandoned on the streets, rescued from human trafficking, or freed from various forms of abuse. Through the tireless dedication of our sisters and partners-in-mission, hundreds of young lives have been transformed over these 25 years.

A Mission of Comprehensive Care

The mission of Karunalayam extends far beyond providing basic shelter. In a family-like atmosphere, the center offers comprehensive rehabilitation services that address every aspect of a child’s development. Rescued children receive supportive counseling, education, healthcare, nutritious meals, and vocational training – all designed to help them become independent and empowered adults.

The center’s work has expanded significantly over the years. Through the Child Sponsorship program, vulnerable children whose rights are at risk receive systematic support for their education, health, hygiene, nutrition, and family needs. The sisters have also partnered with the Government of India to manage CHILDLINE 1098, a 24-hour emergency phone service for children in need of care and protection.

Perhaps most remarkably, through seven years of dedicated investigation and intervention, the Good Shepherd team successfully eliminated thousands of children from abusive working conditions and helped them return to school. Community structures have been trained to monitor and prevent child rights violations, creating a protective network that extends far beyond the center’s walls.

A Celebration of Transformation

The day began with a solemn Thanksgiving Eucharist, presided over by Most Rev. Dr. Chinnabathini Bhagya, Bishop of the Diocese of Guntur, joined by priests, Good Shepherd Sisters, and religious from neighbouring communities. In his homily, the Bishop beautifully reflected on the call to be a Good Shepherd in today’s world — recognizing with deep gratitude the sisters’ compassionate dedication in protecting and empowering every girl who found her home at Karunalayam.

The celebration radiated warmth and joy as the Karunalayam children expressed their gratitude through colourful dance and music. The highlight of the day was the joyful reunion of many past residents now women, wives, and mothers who returned with their children to the place that once shaped their dreams. Tears, laughter, and shared memories filled the air as they embraced the sisters who had once been their caregivers, teachers, and family.

Looking Forward with Hope

This Silver Jubilee was more than an anniversary—it was a renewal of bonds woven through years of shared life and love, a celebration of resilience and faithfulness. The gathering demonstrated the profound impact that compassionate care can have on vulnerable lives, transforming not just individuals but entire families and communities.

Over 25 years, Karunalayam has touched countless lives, offering not just shelter but dignity, education, and hope for the future. Each success story represents the collaborative efforts of the Good Shepherd Sisters, our mission partners, and the broader community who have chosen to walk alongside these vulnerable children.

As we look ahead, the mission continues with renewed commitment. The stories of transformation that have emerged from within these walls serve as inspiration for the work yet to be done. Our sisters and partners remain dedicated to walking with many more children on their journey toward fullness of life, ensuring that Karunalayam will continue to be a beacon of hope for generations to come
