As we continue to journey through this period of Lent, we are called to reflect on our relationship with creation and renew our commitment to the principles of justice, peace, and care for creation. Pope Francis calls us to an ecological conversion — a transformation of the heart that recognizes the interconnectedness of all life and challenges us to care for our common home.
In Laudato Si’ (2015), the Pope urges action to combat climate change, protect biodiversity, and address social inequalities. He highlights how environmental degradation disproportionately affects people experiencing poverty and encourages a shift toward sustainable development.
Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd takes a clear position on Integral Ecology, one which reminds us that we are part of a larger Earth community and calls us to live in harmonious relationship with all life forms. The stance we take urges us to create a sustainable global society rooted in respect for nature, human rights, and economic justice. This mission – reinforced in our Call to Action for a Universal Culture of Justice – is not only aligned with our faith but also central to the survival of our planet.
A Call to Action
This Lent, let us seek to truly understand the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic issues. Many of the world’s most vulnerable populations are the first to suffer the consequences of ecological harm. Take, for example, the tireless efforts of women in rural communities — often stewards of the environment — who are disproportionately impacted by climate change and resource scarcity.
Justice demands that we empower those voices, taking action to advocate for policies that protect our planet, promote fair trade practices, and challenge systems that perpetuate environmental degradation.
As a signatory to the Laudato Si Action Platform, the Congregation commits to addressing the injustice and suffering caused by environmental exploitation. On a personal level, consider what you can do to join hands with others in powerful acts of solidarity. Even small changes in your lifestyle—reducing waste, conserving resources, or choosing eco-friendly products—can have a ripple effect.
What will you do today to honor God’s creation through your actions?
