Nuestro servicio de la misión in Japan is centered on walking alongside children and youth, especially those in vulnerable situations. In Sendai, we carry out this ministry through two key facilities that provide care, education, and hope for the future.
Child Care Facility: A Place of Protection and Healing
Located in Sendai, this facility currently provides a safe and supportive home for 40 children, aged 3 to 18. These children are referred to us through the Child Consultation Center, most having experienced abuse or neglect in their homes.
- Ages 3 to 6 attend our Sayuri Nursery School.
- Ages 7 to 18 go to public schools in the area.
- After turning 18, many transition into employment with companies or organizations.
This ministry was founded nearly 90 years ago by the Religious of the Good Shepherd (RGS) Sisters who came from MONTREAL, CANADÁ. At that time, Sendai was a poor rural area, and the Sisters worked to shelter and protect disadvantaged children from poverty and various crime. After World War II, they cared for children orphaned by the war.
Today, the challenges have changed, but the mission remains the same — to offer safety and healing. Abuse now often comes from within the home, making our role even more vital. A dedicated team of 33 staff members work together to care for the children, helping them grow with dignity and hope.
Sayuri Nursery School: Supporting Local Families
La Sayuri Nursery School was established 55 years ago to support working mothers in the local community. With a capacity for 70 children aged 3 to 6, it offers early education and care that supports both the children and their families.
While some children from the Child Care Facility attend the nursery, the majority come from local households. The school is staffed by 22 caring professionals who are committed to nurturing each child’s growth in a warm, inclusive environment.
These two facilities continue the long-standing mission of the RGS Sisters in Japan — to uplift, accompany, and empower children and youth. Rooted in compassion and inspired by faith, we are honored to serve those entrusted to our care.
