Dear sisters, partners-in-mission, and friends,
As we continue our collective mission across the globe, we want to share updates regarding the various crisis situations currently affecting the countries where our communities, sisters, and partners-in-mission are present. We are deeply concerned for those affected by war, natural disasters, and oppressive regimes, and we remain steadfast in our support of the vulnerable communities with whom we walk in solidarity.
Kenya: Severe Floods and Financial Assistance
In Kenya, our mission was severely impacted by flooding, which devastated communities and caused widespread displacement. In response to this urgent need, GSIF (Good Shepherd International Foundation) enlisted the support of our Congregation, providing financial aid to the affected regions. The support was well received, and it has enabled our sisters and partners-in-mission to offer much-needed relief to some of the affected families, providing essential resources such as food, clothing, and medical supplies. This collaborative effort has been a vital source of hope and recovery for those affected.
Lebanon: War and Political Unrest
While the current war situation in Lebanon is affecting many parts of the country, we are relieved to report that our sisters, partners-in-mission, and those we serve are safe and not personally affected by the violence. However, the ongoing instability is of great concern for the wider population who suffer severe pain and loss. We are closely monitoring the situation, with the hope that these attacks will cease and all people in these conflict areas will see the dawning of peace.
“The Good Shepherd Sisters and their teams are part of some grassroots efforts. We cannot be other than deeply moved by the disasters that are taking place around us. The Pope declared in April 2024: “Please, countries at war, all of them, stop the war. Look to negotiate. Look for peace“. We are invited to play a vital role in promoting peace and reconciliation, as Saint John Eudes and Saint Mary Euphrasia did in their times. We carry the weight of our desire for peace in our hearts. Moved by compassion, we are determined to take action and support our brothers and sisters in their time of need. We are invited in the next few days to assist displaced families who have recently arrived, particularly in accessing healthcare and basic necessities”. (The sisters of Lebanon)
Myanmar: Floods Amidst Civil Conflict
Our hearts go out to the people of Myanmar, who are enduring both devastating floods and the tragic violence of their governing body’s war against its citizens. Despite the immense challenges, our sisters in Myanmar are courageously involved in relief efforts, working alongside NGOs and other humanitarian agencies to provide aid to flood victims. Food and medical assistance are being distributed to those in need, and we commend the resilience and solidarity of our sisters during this critical time. Their presence is a source of hope and healing amidst the chaos.
Thailand: Floods and Relief Efforts
Thailand is also facing severe flooding, which has displaced many families and caused widespread damage. Since mid-September 2024, heavy rains brought by monsoon conditions have triggered widespread flooding across northern and northeastern Thailand, particularly in the provinces of Nong Khai, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Phuket. These areas are home to many vulnerable communities that Good Shepherd Thailand serves.
We are grateful to report that our sisters and partners-in-missions are safe. In response to the crisis, they have actively joined forces with local NGOs and humanitarian agencies to deliver much-needed relief to affected communities. Together, they are distributing food, water, and other essentials to those most impacted by the floods. Our mission team continues to be a beacon of support for those suffering during these difficult times.
Central East India-Nepal (CEIN): Floods and Emergency Aid
In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states of India, severe flooding has affected numerous communities. The people of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are not only displaced from their houses, but their household goods, food items, stock for the year, clothes, livestock, and other belongings have been lost. Some have even lost their dear ones and family members. Our sisters, who are safe, have been involved in providing relief efforts, food, and material aid to those who have lost their homes and livelihoods. The flooding has caused extensive damage, but through our sisters’ dedicated service, families are receiving the immediate support they need to survive. We continue to stand in solidarity with those impacted, ensuring they are not left behind.
Nicaragua: Government Control and Religious Suppression
In Nicaragua, the ongoing oppression and control by the governing authorities have led to the shutdown of various religious and civil institutions. Our sisters, partners-in-mission, and program participants are navigating these challenges with courage. Financial assistance and other forms of support are being provided to those within our institute during this troubling time, ensuring that they have the resources they need to continue the mission and survive amidst the growing restrictions.
Conclusion
We are immensely grateful for the unwavering dedication of our sisters and partners-in-mission, who continue to embody our values of compassion, reconciliation, and justice, even in the face of crisis. While the situations in these countries are grave, we are inspired by the resilience and solidarity of those working to bring relief to affected communities.
Please continue to keep all those impacted by these crises in your thoughts and prayers. We remain hopeful that, through collective action and unwavering faith, we will bring hope, comfort, and tangible support to those who need it most.
In solidarity and prayer,
