I’m going to need all the black clothes we have.

When Alana came into the Vista Maria Boutique, she was on a mission. She was there to gather costumes and stagehand outfits for her new autobiographical play, Moment of Truth. This wasn’t just any school play. Alana was in the process of creating a dramatic retelling of her own journey through trauma and healing.

A few weeks later, you could hear a pin drop in the activity center as the lights dimmed and the cast took their places. Staff, classmates, and teachers were all excited to support this brave youth in taking ownership of her story and sharing it with an audience.

Alana’s latest opus is a perfect example of how Vista Maria’s suite of expressive therapies plays a crucial role in the healing process for our youth. With programs that incorporate art, music, dance, writing, and more, Vista Maria provides a safe space for youth to process their emotions and reclaim their personal narratives.

We are so proud of the way she took full creative control of her play, demonstrating both her leadership and her artistic vision. She wrote the script, chose the costumes, designed the set, and directed her own classmates in their roles. Every element of Moment of Truth reflected her personal journey. For Alana, this wasn’t just a performance— it was a truly transformative experience. It was a way to express herself and reclaim her voice on her own terms.

At Vista Maria, healing takes many forms, each as unique as the children themselves. Alana’s story highlights the impact of expressive therapies, but we know each child needs to find their own meaningful way to heal from trauma. Whether it’s through theater, sports, art, or quiet reflection, our goal is to provide the support they need to reclaim their story and move forward with confidence.

Since 1883, inspired by the compassion of the Good Shepherd Sisters, Vista Maria has empowered girls, youth, and families to heal and thrive. With safe spaces and transformative care, we open doors to a life beyond trauma, filled with hope and possibility. For more information about Vista Maria, visit www.vistamaria.org.
