Voices from around the world joined together to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8. In many of the 68 countries where the Congregation is present, sisters and partners-in-mission hosted meaningful events aimed at honoring and empowering women and acknowledging the transformative role they play in society and the mission of the Church.

This year’s theme of Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress touches the core of our vision that all persons, with a special awareness of women and girls, ought to share in the economic, social, and spiritual benefits of our global wealth. We invest in women to spark change and speed the transition towards a healthier, safer, and more equal world for all.

One such voice among the chorus was that of Sr Fiona Mary Yeo who took part in The Faith Perspective podcast on Embracing the ‘Feminine Genius’ by CatholicSG Radio in Singapore. In the radio interview, Sr Fiona spoke about what the ‘feminine genius’ looks like in her areas of mission and how the figure of the mother of Jesus inspires her in her ministries. She also spoke on the role of women in the Church and on how to unlock their potential.

In an article published by Catholic News, Singapore, she also shared her reflections on Pope Francis’ hopes that the Church will listen more to the voices of women, as written in his preface to the Italian book, Making the Church Less Masculine?

In Chiang Rai, Thailand, sisters and partners-in-mission gathered early for a parade and opening ceremony. These events were followed by activities throughout the day at the Good Shepherd premises which focused on different aspects of women’s rights, empowerment, and well-being.

Participants moved from words to action as they planted trees following their session on environmental sustainability in light of Laudato Si’ and created heart-shaped keychain arches to represent unity and love and symbolize their commitment to women’s rights. Spirits were raised throughout the day as prizes were awarded to activity participants.

The official color of International Women’s Day is purple, representing dignity, power, creativity, and hope. As a powerful symbol of the ongoing struggle for gender equality, children at Rosa Virginia Pelletier School in Mexico each created a purple flower to remember the women who are unable to celebrate the day and to raise awareness of the ongoing struggle women encounter around the world. The following Friday, the students were invited to participate and share stories about the women who have left their mark throughout history.

Activities and events organized throughout the day by sisters and partners-in-mission around the Congregation created opportunities for awareness-raising and discussion and provided the chance to distribute vital resources and information about our mission to empower women and offer solutions to the issues they face. As a global voice, we take action every day through our ministries to educate, empower, and inspire women to take charge of their lives and advocate for their rights.

It is by raising the voices and profile of women that we can achieve a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
