On September 10, 2025, Sr. Bernadette Brommer was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in Munich, Germany, for her unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable elderly individuals from inheritance fraud and financial abuse.

Sr. Bernadette’s journey into this vital ministry began in 2010 when she first encountered the devastating practice of inheritance hunting during her pastoral care work. Recognizing the profound injustice faced by vulnerable elderly people who were being exploited through the misuse of powers of attorney, she felt called to take action. Her response exemplifies the Good Shepherd mission of standing with those who are marginalized and defenseless.

Minister of Culture Anna Stolz captured the essence of Sr. Bernadette’s work during the award ceremony, emphasizing her dedication as a shepherdess: “You are a dedicated pastor who supports people in difficult life situations with great heart and passion. Your goal is to alleviate the suffering of those affected through information, counseling, and prevention, and to sensitize society through your public relations work.”

Since joining the Congregation in Munich in 1978, Sr. Bernadette has demonstrated exceptional commitment to social justice work for the vulnerable. Her ministry expanded significantly in 1994 when she began serving as a pastoral caregiver, and since 2022, she has focused specifically on “Pastoral Care for People with Disabilities.” However, her most pressing concern remains combating inheritance hunters who prey upon elderly individuals.

The impact of Sr. Bernadette’s work resonates throughout Germany and beyond. Through her “My Sister Act” campaign, launched in 2010, she has become known far beyond Munich’s borders as a voice for the socially disadvantaged. Her website serves as a resource center, while her numerous lectures and events provide education and support to countless individuals affected by financial abuse.

Minister Anna Stolz highlighted the broader significance of Sr. Bernadette’s work, noting that she gives voice to socially disadvantaged people and supports them with advice and assistance. The Minister described her as “an admirable personality who selflessly dedicates herself to her fellow human beings and lives by values such as respect and empathy.

Representatives from the Munich community, including Sisters M. Cordis, M. Rosa Virginia Brill, M. Gratia Buschheuer, and M. Bettina Mooken, attended the award ceremony at the State Ministry of Education and Culture to witness this momentous recognition.

The Federal Cross of Merit represents more than personal recognition; it validates the critical importance of Sr. Bernadette’s mission and amplifies her voice in calling for legal reforms. Her dedication to transforming systems that fail to protect the vulnerable serves as an inspiration to all who seek to live out the Good Shepherd charism in service to others.

We join with the entire Good Shepherd family in congratulating Sr. Bernadette on this well-deserved honor. Her zeal, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice exemplify the transformative power of one person’s dedication to serving others. We pray for her continued strength and God’s blessing as she advances this vital work that touches so many lives with hope and healing.
